What is Heaventrain?

Heaventrain is a brightly painted bus that was designed with kids in mind. It is equipped to reach out to children in ten of Cleveland's poorest neighborhoods as a "Church on Wheels." For 29 years, Rev. Phil Batten and his team of Heaventrain volunteers have been visiting Cleveland housing projects handing out food and sharing the Gospel with the children they serve.

How do I get involved?heaventrain.001

Two teams of Christ the King volunteers join the Heaventrain ministry team one Saturday a month from May to December, for a truly delightful day of serving inner-city/east-side projects children by providing a unique time of fun-Bible teaching and a good meal.

What does a typical Saturday outreach look like?

Our morning team leave CTK no later than 9:30 a.m. and meet the others at the Burger King located on Carnegie Ave. at the I-90/Carnegie exit. From there we follow the Blue Bus to three of the project sites and assist the ministry by loving and entertaining the kids as they sign-up and wait to board the bus for their teaching and meal ticket. Usually we have about three bus loads at each stop and help them get settled as they eat their meal and further assist by cleaning up when they're finished. We typically serve about 700 kids at our three stops, and are there to help in whatever way the ministry leaders direct us.

We return to the Burger King about 1:30 p.m where we meet with the shift change volunteers, who will make the afternoon run to three other project locations. The second shift leaves for their tour at 2:30 p.m. sharp and will serve about 1100 children over the course of the afternoon. Their duties are the same as the morning shift, and they will return to the Burger King around 5:30 p.m.

We currently have approx 31 people signed up as volunteers. Some will go every Saturday, while others go once or twice a year.
